#AntarcticLog: 200 million displaced by climate change

#AntarcticLog is a series of comics by Karen Romano Young. You can find the originals here

It’s a week to celebrate for me: #AntarcticLog #200 just posted.  Here it is. To acknowledge the moment, I looked for a topic that would reflect that number: 200. And what I came up with was sobering: the World Bank’s assessment of the number of humans due to be displaced by climate change. (And that’s just the humans.)

200 million.  Try getting your head around that number. I did. What is there 200 million of, that I could envision?  It turns out that that’s the population of Pakistan.

And, further, Pakistan is one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change.

And, Pakistanis are working to do something about it.

The story is something I’ve done a few times: zeroed in on a specific nation or region that was experiencing climate change in a noticeable way, whether through flooding in Venice…

…or through the melting of glaciers in the Himalayas

…or through the thawing of permafrost in the Saami lands in northern Europe.

Something tells me there are plenty more stories to tell.
