Today has been a busy day in the natural hazards world. Last night in unrealted incidents a sinkhole opened without warning in central Germany and a landslide killed a small child and his mother in Italy. Meanwhile, Hurricane Tomas has caused widespread destruction in St Lucia and is still forecast to pass directly over the earthquake-affected areas of Haiti.

Hurricane Tomas is currently passing through the southern part of the Caribbean. Yesterday it passed over St Vincent, causing extensive damage. The Prime Minister of St Vincent and the Grenadines, Dr Ralph Gonsalves, is reported to have described the storm as “the worst storm in living memory” and to have said “It is terrible, we are in a bad way”. The end of the month marks the point at which I post the accumulated totals for fatal landslides, based upon the global fatal landslide database that I maintain. The raw figures for August are stark. The total number of fatal landslides recorded in the month was 71, resulting in 2,740 fatalities.
