Landslides from the 14 August 2021 M=7.2 earthquake in Haiti
The 14 August 2021 M=7.2 earthquake in Haiti triggered many landslides. A recent paper (Havenith et al. 2022) suggests that this might in part have been because the slopes were preconditioned (weakened) by earlier earthquakes and storms.

Deforestation, erosion and Cholera in Haiti
Deforestation is a major problem in Haiti, with 98% of natural woodlands having been removed. This post highlights a recent suggestion by an NGO that deforestation may be in part a cause of the current cholera outbreak in Haiti. Whilst this idea is unproven, the need for afforestation to be a part of the rehabilitation of Haiti is undeniable.

Hurricane Tomas, Mount Merapi and landslides in Costa Rica
With three substantial natural hazard events occurring simultaneously, I thought I would post a round-up of those rapidly-evolving events: 1. Hurricane Tomas As feared, Hurricane Tomas is now bringing heavy rainfall to Haiti. The path of the storm has been somewhat erratic, as the Tropical Storm Risk track map shows. However, the storm is now tracking in a generally north-northwesterly direction, and is likely to pass just to the west of …

Updates – the Canterbury earthquake railway line; Hurricane Tomas and Haiti; and Manchhar lake in Pakistan
This is a general update email on a range of recent posts: 1. A sinkhole in Germany, a landslide in Italy and the forecast path of Hurricane Tomas (which has already caused landslides in St Lucia)
Today has been a busy day in the natural hazards world. Last night in unrealted incidents a sinkhole opened without warning in central Germany and a landslide killed a small child and his mother in Italy. Meanwhile, Hurricane Tomas has caused widespread destruction in St Lucia and is still forecast to pass directly over the earthquake-affected areas of Haiti.

Two fatal landslides in the earthquake affected areas of Haiti
Problems continue in the earthquake affected areas of Haiti, where over 2 million people remain essentially homeless 10 months after the devastating earthquake. Reporters Live are carrying a story that heavy rainfall in the last 48 hours has triggered two, rather different fatality-inducing landslides: 1. A collapse in a sand quarryIllegal quarrying of sand to be used for rebuilding is turning into a major, if unsurprising, problem in the hills …

Images of landslides triggered by the Haiti earthquake
The USGS have posted a set of images taken by Randy Jibson and Ed Harp of landslides triggered by the Haiti earthquake earlier this year. The images may be found here: http://landslides.usgs.gov/learning/photos/international/haiti_earthquake-induced_landslides__january_12__2010 Although the occurrence of landslides was certainly lower than we might have expected, there are some interesting landslides included: A useful resource and a salient reminder of the threats that the people of Haiti face during this hurricane …
