#AntarcticLog: Coming together for science

Posted by Shane Hanlon

#AntarcticLog is a series of comics by Karen Romano Young. You can find the originals here.

My Twitter feed is full of calls for peace. And last week’s #AntarcticLog post had a call for “more science!” Coming right up.

Actually, Antarctica is proof that we can have peace and science, and that the countries of the world can come together to secure it.

#AntarcticLog is dedicated to climate change research — and the policy and activism that results — from pole to pole. Here are just a few examples of the science I’ve covered through this comic.

First, aerosol-sampling via helicopter based aboard the Swedish icebreaker Oden.

Then, IceSat2 (Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite), which uses lasers to  map polar ice.

Using the Laurence M. Gould as a platform in the Southern Ocean, scientists check off a list of errands — and experiences that add to knowledge and peace.
