It is hard to imagine what this would have looked like in reality. The answer is something like this:

This is the very cost of the failure of effective disaster risk reduction, and the continuing unwillingness to address climate change.
Climate change? No, the climate has never been static as long as ice cores have shown. Moreover, lidar maps show landslides and debris flows from ancient times in far more places than were previously realized.
