The Guatemala landslide – video of the failure in December
Posted by Dave Petley
The Guatemalan landslide becomes more interesting by the day. It is now apparent that the first failure, which occurred on 14th December and killed five people (the remains of three of whom were not recovered) was also caught on video. This is available on Youtube. I have embedded it below, so should work:
If not, then it can be viewed here.
Hi Dave. Over at the redhum.org site http://tinyurl.com/9h4vvk (check the table below) I found an event report made by CONRED with a map of the landslide location. I’ve made a GE file with it, you can download it at the GE Community forum http://tinyurl.com/7ovmee.Also make sure to check out the kml file and response I’ve gotten from a person that is testing a new SRTM landslide analysis tool, called GeoSPIRS. Personally, I’m not sure how different it is from a regular slope analysis, but you can read more about it at GiB’s landslide blog http://landslides-gib.blogspot.com/, and here http://tinyurl.com/a4qan7.Still, from the analysis, it’s pretty obvious that the area with the most risk was the one that caused this disaster, and there seems to be others with similar risk. Apparently this is not over yet, let’s just hope there aren’t more fatalities.Cheers.
