Oil and Water From Space

NASA’s AQUA satellite made a pass over Nashville and the Gulf at 1850GMT today. (1:50pm Central U.S. summer time). The flooded rivers around Nashville are clearly evident in the image (see below). Nashville is at the center of the image. Accurate rain gauges from Central Tennessee show a rain event of incredible proportions. Areas around Nashville had over 17 inches of rain in 24 hours. This is more than one …

Amazing Flood Event In Tennessee. Climate Related??

Mobile homes floating down I-24 in Tennessee on Saturday. That is something you don’t see every day. It was an amazing and tragic event. Five deaths and many people are homeless and many more have flooded homes and businesses. This was a lot more than a 100 year flood. Nashville weather records go back over 120 years and there has been nothing like this before. (Update: Chris Darden of the …

Oil Spill Is Worse and Here Comes The Wind..

Late word on Wednesday night that the oil slick in the Gulf is being fed by a leak that is 5 times bigger than first estimated. At 5,000 feet deep it is going to be very difficult to stop it. Why The Vanishing Polar Ice Cap Will Impact You

The folks at the National Snow and Ice Data Center have released some new data on the polar ice as we head into late autumn in the Northern Hemisphere. California Mud- It's just getting Started

This past week has brought some serious flooding to California. This could not come at a worse time with so many hills and mountains denuded of ground cover by the Summer fires. No ground cover means nothing to hold the soaked soil in place, and it will take even less rain than normal to start the famous mud slide season. Here in my part of the world, it’s almost as …

Climate Change in a 10 Second Movie

August2009-ClimateAnom The data for the Summer of 2009 is in from NASA and NOAA. Just when I think the news has to get better on climate change, it gets worse. Surely some of the predictions will turn out to be too warm and some will turn out to be too cool. Unfortunately, the predictions all keep turning out to be too low. The planet is warming faster, and the ice …

If a Picture Paints A Thousand Words- Then Look at 3

NASA GISS has the Summer global temp. data online now. August 2009 was the Second warmest on record globally. The Northern Hemisphere meteorological summer of 2009 was the third warmest on record. Only 1998 was warmer. The reason 1998 was so warm is easily explained. The Pacific ocean was incredibly warm that year. The reason?  The greatest El Nino event on record. That much warm water heated the surface temperature of …
