Did you find the rock in its present form? or did you have to chip residual rock away from the top and bottom to reveal the natural shape of the folds?
That’s awesome, Callan! We were hiking in the Galatin forest last month, and I had no idea that the rocks beneath were so old. Or so beautifully folded.
Hi Heather! Great to see you out here, milling about in the geoblogosphere. The Gallatin NF includes several other areas besides the Gallatin Range — so you may or may not have been hiking over these ancient rocks. Regardless of age, though, the rocks beneath all Montana,s mountains are interesting!

For his work on this blog, the National Association of Geoscience Teachers recognized him with the James Shea Award. He has also won the Outstanding Faculty Award from the State Council on Higher Education in Virginia, and the Biggs Award for Excellence in Geoscience Teaching from the Geoscience Education Division of the Geological Society of America. In previous years, Callan served as a contributing editor at EARTH magazine, President of the Geological Society of Washington and President the Geo2YC division of NAGT.
