(updated) Name the landslide 2
Posted by Dave Petley
Updated with a hint below
The winner of the Name the Landslide 1 hasn’t yet been able to suggest round 2 (the invite is still open), but in the meantime here is one to think about. As before, the challenge is to name the landslide as shown on Google Earth and to briefly describe the main movement event. Trickier this time…
Please post your suggestions in the comments section.
Hint: the landslide was triggered in 1999, along with about 22,000 others.
Wow, hard one! I found it by accident in Taiwan, because the landscape looked somehow tropical and this island is famous for mass movements. I think it is the Chiu-fen-erh-shan landslide, triggered by the M7.3 Chi-Chi earthquake (1999) in Taiwan. Geology: – stratified sandstone and shale- dip and slope in the same direction, in the order of 20°-36°- slip surface along a bedding fault- high precipitation- low drainage densityLandslide volume: 30.000.000 m³ – 90.000.000 m³Am I right?[Wang et al. 2003. Geological and geomorphological precursors of the Chiu-fen-erh-shan landslide triggered by the Chi-chi earthquake in central Taiwan.
