Climate Change in a 10 Second Movie

August2009-ClimateAnom The data for the Summer of 2009 is in from NASA and NOAA. Just when I think the news has to get better on climate change, it gets worse. Surely some of the predictions will turn out to be too warm and some will turn out to be too cool. Unfortunately, the predictions all keep turning out to be too low. The planet is warming faster, and the ice …

If a Picture Paints A Thousand Words- Then Look at 3

NASA GISS has the Summer global temp. data online now. August 2009 was the Second warmest on record globally. The Northern Hemisphere meteorological summer of 2009 was the third warmest on record. Only 1998 was warmer. The reason 1998 was so warm is easily explained. The Pacific ocean was incredibly warm that year. The reason?  The greatest El Nino event on record. That much warm water heated the surface temperature of …

Extreme Ice Survey- The Pictures Tell The Story

I have linked to some of the excellent TED talks before in this space. This one is perhaps the best I have seen. There is an old saying that perception is reality. That seems to be the problem in regard to climate science. Many people think that scientists are still arguing over it. They are not. Getting that message out is one reason I started writing these ramblings about the …

Climate News Going from Bad To Worse

A major study on the Arctic temperatures was published this past week in SCIENCE. It’s gotten a lot of press attention, and a huge amount of attention in the Science world. It’s not uncommon for those not familiar with the science to ask questions along the lines of “How can they possibly know what the temperature was 500 years ago! There were no thermometers!” If science education were better in …

Clouds & Ice Make Climate News

This last week brought an update on the Arctic sea ice from the NSIDC folks. It also saw the publication of a paper in SCIENCE that made almost all of us who follow climate science, sit up and notice. Neither is particularly good news, and that may be an understatement. First the ice- or lack of same. 2007 saw the lowest amount of Arctic Ocean ice on record. I happened …

The Big Melt Speeds Up in The Big White Quiet

I’m very lucky to be one of the few people on this planet who has spent time well north of the Arctic Circle. There is a big difference between seeing the High Arctic on the Discovery Channel, and actually being there. People have asked me what it was like and I tell them what surprised me most wasn’t the fact that it never got dark, and that you could see the sun in …

Shed A Tear For The Cryosphere

A lot of news about the Arctic Sea ice in the past few days. NASA and the National Snow and Ice Data Center issued a report Monday morning that showed the average ice coverage in March was 15.16 million Sq. KM. This is well below the 1979-2000 average for March. The ice is well above the record low in 2006, but the news is generally bad. Most of the ice …

The Big Melt Gets Worse

A new report, released by the United Nations Environmental Program, has some more alarming climate news in it. The glaciers of the world are monitored by the WGM. Take a guess….yup. It’s the World Glacier Monitoring service. Funded by the WMO and others. The big news in this report is not so much that the galciers worldwide are in retreat. The real news, is that the rate of retreat in …

NCAR Climate Videos

The scientists who work at the National centers For Atmospheric Research (NOAA) have produced some excellent short movies about Climate Change. They are designed to answer some of the common questions that many people have. These are basic primers and teachers may find them of great use. Especially middle school and up. Not really suitable for elementary age. NCAR CLIMATE VIDEOS There continues to be almost no info on climate …

Two Must Read Articles In The NY Times

Andy Revkin the science writer at the New York Times has an interesting article on Arctic sea ice today. The ice reached a new record low last September and is approaching the same level again this year. You should realize that the ice cover is disappearing at a much faster rate than the IPCC models have been forecasting.  Now, a majority of scientists who study the ice, feel that we …
