Declining Penguins in a Sick, Oily, and Plastic Ocean

A couple of TED talks That should leave you angry. It does me. First is the slurry of plastic we now have in our oceans. One thing you can do is to NEVER use plastic at the grocery store. Next are one of my favourite subjects. Penguins. They truly are the warning sign of what we are doing to our oceans. Nearly every species on the planet is in sharp …

Brian Cox on Exploration

Brian Cox was host of Wonders Of The Solar System on the BBC earlier this year. As I wrote in a previous post, the series was the first I have seen that surpassed Carl Sagan’s COSMOS. TED (Ideas Worth Spreading) invited Cox to make a talk on exploration. I do not even have to watch it to know that I should post it here. I cannot imagine that I’ll disagree …

Scientific Literacy by Neil DeGrasse Tyson

A HUGE bow to Dr. Michael Tobis of Only In It For The Gold. He found this video and posted it. I am posting it too and EVERY person who blogs about science should post it as well. (Maybe I can start something here!) I have several heroes (Everyone should have heroes). Carl Sagan, Richard Feynman and Neil DeGrasse Tyson are all near the top. Sagan and Feynman are no …

The Most Polluted City On Earth and The Pacific Garbage Dump

A link on the CNN website lead me to a couple of must see videos. Both are by vbs.tv. The first is on the most polluted city on Earth. Linfen, China. You may not know it but about 1% of all air pollution in the United States is estimated to originate in China. It takes a lot of coal to make the electricity to run the factories that make all …

The Oil Slick in IR- Courtesy The CBS

Satellite images do not see the oil slick in the Gulf very well. IF the sun angle is just right you can see some of it, and it’s huge. The CBS tonight showed a different view. The oily water is slightly cooler than the regular Gulf water. The oil slick shows up well in the Infrared spectrum. This comes as there is growing evidence the attempt to stop the oil …

Storm- By Tim Minchin

Tim Minchin is going to be at TAM (The Amazing Meeting) in London in the autumn and Stephen Fry himself is on the bill. Would dearly love to go to that but 400 quid a ticket plus transatlantic airfare is more than an ouch. In the been there done that category… Warning for very strong language and not suitable for under 13, but well worth watching…

Science On The Ice- Part 2

Here is another video/slide-show of my January trip courtesy the National Science Foundation to see the Science underway in Antarctica. I am planing 5 parts now, because I want to spend more time on the astronomy and climate science being done. My travel colleague Ann Posegate of NEEF is also working on a similar project and I’ll post her’s here as well soon. This was all edited on my macbook pro. The …

Is Brian Cox The Next Carl Sagan?? My Vote is YES.

Dr. Brian Cox. Rock band musician and physicist. No, really. He played in the rock band DARE with Thin Lizzy’s Darren Wharton. If you’re in the UK and have not seen Wonders of The Solar System on BBC Two, then fire up the iPlayer and watch it. All four episodes that have aired are just superb. They are the only TV productions I’ve seen about astronomy that equals or surpasses …

The Greenhouse At The Bottom of The World

A little story for you. I’m on the board of our great science museum, SCI Quest, here in Huntsville. Just before my trip to the South Pole, I found out about a project some students were doing with help from Sci Quest. I was asked if  it might be possible to get some info or pictures of a greenhouse in Antarctica for them. The students are involved in an eCybermission …
