Debris flow disaster in Leh, Indian Kashmir
Posted by Dave Petley
Thanks to several people for the heads up on this. Various Indian news agencies are reporting that the town of Leh in Ladakh, Indian controlled Kashmir was hit by a series of debris flows / flas floods triggered by a cloudburst. The reported death toll is currently reported to be at least 50, and may increase substantially.
This Panoramio image gives a fairly good idea of what Leh is like:
As per the news more than 100 people have died so far, many more missing. Choglamsar has taken the maximum hit as it is in low lying area. I have friends in Leh and thank God all of them are safe but houses of many are damaged and half submerged.
Let's all do our bit for victims of the Leh floods. Donate to those NGOs working for rehabilitation at Leh.
