I do a lot of (motorcycle) riding up in that area (Tenn / North Car. / North Georgia) and the one thing that's always going through my mind is "Be ready to stop at any time."
Maybe if you drove the same road every single day and knew it so well that you could more or less turn your brain off while driving. Not an excuse, but maybe part of an explanation.
