One day to go…
Posted by Dave Petley
As you are probably aware, this blog is about to migrate to an AGU hosted web site. All being well, the blog will move late tomorrow (21st October). I am hoping that there will be no interruption along the way. I will post the new location in the next few hours and plan to run the two sites in parallel for a few weeks.
One minor change that I have decided to implement is that the blog on the new site will be called “The Landslide Blog” rather than “Dave’s Landslide Blog”.
I definitely think that "Dave's Landslide Blog" is a better title, at least as long as you maintain editory control and continue to be the sole or primary contributor. I think it gives the site more personality and approachable-ness somehow, which is one of the great potential advantages of the internet as a medium of communication. As the recent issues with climate denial demonstrate, improving the interface between scientists and regular folks is really important.
I agree wholeheartedly with Gabriel's suggestion and reasons for keeping the name of your blog Dave. However, Gabriel's statement about climate "denial" is a non-sequitur. The achievement of concern (read: hysteria) about the climate is a triumph of marketing techniques directed toward the scientifically and/or politically ignorant. The very phrase "climate denial" conveys a carefully crafted psychological "put-down" which, if denied, would appear as defensiveness.
I do agree with Gabriel and tinoh. 'Dave's Landslide Blog' sounds more accessible to anyone and everyone, especially those without a geoscience background – this is one of the great things about the blog. Good luck for the move!
