Distorted railway lines in the Christchurch Earthquake
After the September 2010 Darfield earthquake I posted Malcolm Teesdale’s now famous image of distorted railway track. This post provides an update in light of the Christchurch earthquake, including an explanation as to why this type of deformation can occur in tracks.

The Canterbury Earthquake: Images of the distorted railway line
A recent post was centred on images of the fault rupture of the September 2010 Canterbury earthquake in New Zealand. This post uses images provided by Malcolm Teasdale of Kiwirail to show the kine buckling that occurred on a railway track at the point that it crossed area of the surface fault expression close to Rolleston at the east end of the fault system.

The location of the Italian train crash landslide
Thanks to David Bressan of the Cryology and Co blog for help in identifying the location of the landslide in Italy today that derailed a train, killing at least nine passengers. A landslide (frana in Italian) occurred this morning at Merano, near to Bolzano in northern Italy, striking a train that was derailed. Reports suggest that 11 9 people were killed and a further 30 were injured. Landslide-induced train accident in China
The landslide misery in China continues, despite the strange lack of typhoons to date this summer. The latest incident occurred in Liuzhou City of Guangxi Province when a train struck a landslide and derailed. According to Xinhua four people were killed and 50 others were injured, at least ten of whom were seriously hurt.
