First news – the earthquake in India, Nepal and Bhutan this afternoon
At 12:40 UT (18:40 local time) today an earthquake struck Sikkim in northern India, producing significant shaking in Nepal, India and, probably Bhutan. According to the USGS information page for the event, this is a magnitude 6.9 event at a depth of about 20 km, though note that this will probably change slightly as better data become available. Building Rural Resilience in Seismically Active Areas
Mega cities often receive all the attention when it comes to earthquake risk reduction activities, but what about rural communities living in seismically active areas? As the recent earthquakes in Kashmir, Pakistan and Sichuan, China have shown, rural populations are vulnerable not only to the shaking but also the secondary hazards associated with earthquake events. In this blog post series, Katie Oven and Nick Rosser summarise a scoping study funded by the NERC and ESRC which focuses on rural communities specifically and explores how science and local knowledge can be combined to build resilience at the local level.

Landslides in Nepal
A review of landslides in Nepal, highlighting trends in time, and outlining why this issue needs to be addressed. The UK government’s abnnouncement today that their aid funding for Nepal for the next five years will highlight disaster risk reduction, including reducing landslide losses, is very welcome.
