The Pike River Coal Mine accident
Although the key focus of my research is landslides, I also spend some of my time working with mining companies. Thus, the Pike River accident in New Zealand is of interest. The blast today appears to have left at least 27 miners trapped underground; at the time of writing there has been no contact with the missing workers, although rescue operations are clearly underway. Intriguing landslide at Nachterstedt in Germany
NB: I have posted an update on this landslide here. A somewhat intriguing landslide occurred on Saturday at Nachterstedt in Germany (the location is 51.808 N, 11.343 E for those who are interested). The site is the edge of Lake Concordia, a flooded open cast coal mine: The mine apparently closed in 1991 whereupon it was converted into a recreation area. The lake was apparently created in 1994. Chongqing landslide rescue update – 23rd June
Xinhua has a video report about the ongoing rescue attempts at the Chongqing landslide site. The report suggests that remotely sensed imagery allowed a number of locations in which the crags in the head scar area were found to be unstable and threatening the rescue teams. The latest update on the Chongqing landslide rescue
Xinhua and CCTV have published updates on the Chongqing landslide rescue. The picture is looking increasingly grim given that the estimated survival time of the miners was five to seven days, and it is now a week since the landslide.
