EGU Day 3

I am just going to write up one session from today’s meeting as it contained the most interesting talks that I heard. This was an annual session on landslides induced by volcanoes and earthquakes, the first three talks of which focussed on the Wenchuan event. Regular readers will know that I am very interested indeed in this event (see here for example). So first up was Ed Harp and two …

EGU Day 2

The landslide elements of Day 2 at EGU were split between two sessions on landslide forecasting and two on landslide risk. The latter is of comparatively little interest to me, and I had a load of work to do and meetings to attend, so I only attended the morning sessions. In terms of landslide forecasting, there was some pretty good stuff presented. I would say that some speakers need to …

Updated: European Geosciences Union Day 1

Updated to include the afternoon sessionsThis week is the annual European Geosciences Union assembly in Vienna. This is the biggest annual landslide meeting – there are >300 landslide related papers this time around – and since I am the scientific secretary for the landslide session I cannot allow the opportunity to comment on what I see to pass. So here are my thoughts on Day 1. My intention is not …

World Landslide Forum Report

Readers will probably be aware that last week the First World Landslide Forum was held at the United Nations University in Tokyo. This was apparently “a global cooperation platform for all types of organizations from academia, United Nations, governments, private sectors, and individuals which are willing to contribute for landslide and other related earth system risk reduction.”Unfortunately I wasn’t able to attend, but two of my colleagues (Nick Rosser and …

Conference report: Sendai

Here are my views of the Sendai landslide conference. The meeting was entitled “The First World Landslide Forum Satellite Conference”, with the theme of “Management of Landslide Hazard in the Asia-Pacific Region”. There were over 200 delegates from more than 30 countries, with many (but not all) Asia Pacific countries represented. The first memorable contribution was the short but sweet keynote by Alexander Strom. It is being argued by some, …

Scottish landslide study

August 2004 was unusually wet in, with some areas of the country experiencing three times the long term average rainfall for the month. The most memorable manifestation of that time was a series of landslides that hit the road network. In particular, on 18th August a series of debris flows the hit a main road , the A85, in Glen Ogle. This is widely seen as a pretty near miss …

The influence of the summer monsoon on fatal landslides in Asia

I am currently putting together a keynote paper for the forthcoming International Conference on Slopes, which is being held in Malaysia in November. I have been looking at the occurrence of fatal landslides in Asia, using the Durham Landslide Database as the source of data. I have plotted the number of fatal landslides by month for 2002-2007 for three areas – South Asia (i.e. the Indian subcontinent), East Asia (which …
