Peatlands release more methane when disturbed by roads

Roads built through acidic wetlands may make greenhouse gas emissions from the wetlands spike by damming natural water flow, according to a new study in AGU’s Journal of Geophysical Research: Biogeosciences.

Salt-spitting grass could rescue marsh from sea-level rise

Sweet Hall Marsh along the Pamunsky River in Virginia hasn’t been able to keep pace with rising seas, putting it in danger of being flooded. But the emergence of a grass that is a stranger to the marsh could turn out to be its savior.

Over the river and through the marshes

Seventeen ecologists and geomorphologists donned heavy gloves, coats and waterproof boots in Tuesday’s bitter cold to explore the marshes of Jug Bay Wetland Sanctuary. The 1,600-acre sanctuary, about 20 miles east of Washington, D.C., sits along Patuxent River, and is home to a broad array of wildlife, from ospreys to bald eagles. Gregory Kearns guided them through the wetlands, showing them the effects of sea level rise on its marshes.
