AGU endorses the National Landslide Preparedness Act Reauthorization Act of 2024

Posted by Caitlin Bergstrom

On 4 April 2024, AGU sent a letter of endorsement to leadership in the House of Representatives and the Senate for the National Landslide Preparedness Act Reauthorization Act of 2024.

On behalf of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) and our global community of more than half a million Earth and space scientists and allies, I am writing to thank you for introducing H.R.7003, the National Landslide Preparedness Act Reauthorization Act of 2024, and to offer AGU’s support for this important bill.

Landslides, which affect all 50 states and U.S. territories, are highly destructive geologic hazards that often result in loss of life and economic disruption. These impacts are only expected to worsen with climate change. AGU shares your commitment to reducing these losses, and reauthorizing the National Landslide Hazards Reduction Program will play a vital role in achieving that goal.

Many scientists within AGU’s community are dedicated to advancing our understanding of landslides, including the multitude of factors that cause them and their short- and long-term impacts. As such, they can attest to the critical need for advancing the nation’s monitoring and detection capabilities, as well as strengthening mitigation, response, and recovery efforts.

Thank you for your leadership on this legislation, which provides a much-needed update to the nation’s landslide hazards program. AGU looks forward to our ongoing work with you on this critical issue.
