North Alabama Buried in Snow-Again!

I thought I’d share with you some of the images viewers sent in of the heavy snow event over North Alabama. In Huntsville, this is the third heaviest snowfall on record. Number one is the 17 inches that fell on New Year’s Eve in 1963. January 1988 brought 9.6″ and the total last night was 8.9″ at the Huntsville Airport. This event comes just 3 weeks after a very rare …

Rare White Christmas In Southeast USA

For people who live in Tennessee, Georgia or Alabama, a white Christmas truly is just a dream. Not this Christmas though! A heavy blanket of wet snow fell before sunrise on Christmas morning across much of North Alabama. Some areas in the higher elevations of NE Alabama had over 6 inches of snow! In 1989 a dusting of snow fell on Christmas day in the region, and back in 1962 …

Frost Flowers In Alabama

A couple of viewers sent me some pictures of strange ice formations today. They are very beautiful (and rather rare) specimens of what are called “FROST FLOWERS”. They form in areas where the ground is still warm but the air is quite cold. You usually see them after a sudden but intense cold snap. I’ve only seen them one time, but have been on the lookout for them ever since! …

Autumn Colours

For those who live in certain parts of the World, these past few weeks are the most beautiful time of year. The spectacle of autumn colours is one of nature’s most awesome displays. I thought I would share some of it from my part of the planet. These are all from my yard in Northeast Alabama. Sadly, only a fraction of the humans on Earth see these colours. The most …

Oil and Ash from Space- Update

The upper level winds are not blowing the ash toward the UK today and that is very good news. If they were, there would be widespread cancellations of flights. The cloud is especially thick. The good news is that late today the eruption has become much quieter and the ash is not as high as earlier. Geological experts in Iceland are reporting that there are no signs the eruption will …

Huntsville Tornado Rated an EF2

We continue to get pics and video from viewers after yesterday’s tornado here in the Huntspatch (Huntsville AL). Viewer Lauryn Draper shot some great video fo it and put it up on YouTube. The video was shot a few blocks from our studios. The tornado WAS on the ground through most of this video I suspect. Tornadoes are wind and not cloud, so just because you could not see the …
