Sophia Tigges (they/them) is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Earth and Environment at Boston University. After earning a B.S. in planetary science, Sophia worked on tallships as a marine science educator before transitioning into the NOAA fleet as a survey technician. Sophia’s current research area is coastal geomorphology, where they study how coastal landscapes change over time. Specifically, Sophia studies how saltmarshes respond to sea level rise and how beaches erode due to increased storminess. Sophia also enjoys hiking, drawing, knitting, baking, and gardening.
