East Coast (U.S.) earthquakes – What gives?

The USGS Community Internet Intensity Map generated by user-submitted "Did You Feel It?" surveys. Note the wide radius of perceptible shaking. Nearly half of the country was exposed to this earthquake.

On Tuesday afternoon, August 23, 2011, people up and down the United States’ East Coast–and as far inland as Chicago–felt an unmistakable tremor.
