NASA Earth Observation Satellites See Floods in Oklahoma and Arkansas

These two images from the NASA Terra and Aqua satellites are almost exactly 2 years apart. You can easily see the difference the flooding rains have had in the Arkansas River, especially around Fort Smith. More flooding rains are likely over the next 3-4 days across the Plains of Texas and Oklahoma.

Latest Data Says Miami Is Sinking Into The Sea Even Faster Than Thought.

Here is a well written piece full of good factual information on the slow motion disaster underway in South Florida. It’ from Senior Researcher Brian McNoldy at the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine Science. I had a chance a few years back to spend an afternoon there, and talk with some of their scientists, and it was an illuminating day. As you read about the latest research, consider the problems …

Welcome To Oklahoma, The State of Denial

Just as I started putting together this post tonight, I had an instant message from my daughter in Oklahoma City. It said one word  “EARTHQUAKE”. This has become the standard practice, where she messages me, and I let her know within a few minutes where the quake was, and what the magnitude was. We have our own intensity scale that ranges from “I barely felt it” to “It felt …

All Time Records Tumble in Rockies and Plains. Fires Threaten NCAR.

Brutal heat and Severe Flooding

Highs reached 109 (over 40 degrees C for the rest of the more enlightened the world) in Oklahoma on Monday and it was 105 in Limon Colorado and above 105 across much of Kansas. It even reached 102 in NW Alabama but I think the heat will get much worse later this week and spread over an unusually large region fo the U.S. In 33 years of forecasting I have never seen an NWP …

Update: (Now 5) Dead As Midnight Twister Hits Woodward, Oklahoma

The Woodward news paper posted the video of the tornado lit by lightning as it passed into Woodward. A former firefighter who works for KWTV (in Okla. City) as a storm tracker, followed the storm into town.  His coverage was among the most riveting and chilling I’ve heard in such a situation. (Woodward is in far NW Oklahoma, and I passed through the city in January coming back from a …

USGS Scientists: Dramatic Increase in Oklahoma Earthquakes Is Man-Made (Updated)

NPR covered this story today April 11 and you can listen here. I was “face timing” with my daughter in Oklahoma City last November when the biggest quake on record struck the Sooner state. I could see the lights swinging at our home in Oklahoma City as she ran down the stairs, and it was the first time I watched a quake happen live on an iPhone! The quake …
