The deadly bushfires in Australia have now crossed into the new year and the smoke from the fires has crossed over 1700 km to New Zealand. These fires are now the worst on record and also the deadliest. Look at the image below from the Tasman Glacier on the South Island in New Zealand. Do the Farmers In Kansas Know They Are Paying the Flood Insurance Premiums on Million Dollar Beach Houses?

They are. Not all of the premium, but a good portion of it and not only that, they are helping to rebuild the house and in many cases have paid to rebuild it more than once when the ocean/river swamped it again. It’s called the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and as sea levels rise and hurricanes get wetter, it has gotten some much-needed attention. Still, unless you buy a …

NWS Makes Needed Changes to Flash Flood Warnings

What is the number one weather killer in the United States? Did you say tornadoes or hurricanes? If so, you are wrong, but don’t feel bad because everyone misses this question. What IS the main weather killer? In most years it is heat but close behind is floods and particularly flash floods. It seems that nearly every year brings a flood event with great damage and several fatalities. Then there’s …

How You Can Destroy Civilization and Virtually No One Would Notice- At Least For a Few Days!

Chris Colose is a NASA Climate expert working on a new global climate model (GCM). It’s called ROCKE-3D, and is designed to be used not only on earth but on extraterrestrial planets! I can show you could destroy civilization because Chris did it in the new GCM by taking out the CO2 and Methane in one of his model runs, but there’s something you should know first. Were you …

Ed Hawkins “Climate Stripes” May be the Most Important Science Image so Far in This Century

Dr. Ed Hawkins at the University of Reading produced an image last year that made my jaw drop. It now has a name. Climate Stripes. Hawkins assigned colours to the Earth’s temperature since 1850, and it powerfully shows how the planet is warming. It’s rapidly becoming as well known as what may be the most important science image of the last century, Dr. Michael Mann’s famous hockey stick. The hockey …

Straight Talk From an Expert on Climate Change

This is why Katherine Hayhoe got the UN Champion of the Earth Award this month. She deserved it. This is how you communicate science. From her Twitter feed on August 23rd:   And the response when Dr. Hayhoe posts things like this: …and the truth of the matter is that those who claim it is not real are not basing their opinion on fact or evidence. It’s based on FEAR: …

Arctic Sea Ice Melt May be 2nd Lowest On Record

The summer melt of the Arctic sea ice is nearly done and the numbers are flirting with being the 2nd lowest on record. 2012  is the lowest and this year will not be as low but still at alarming levels. The real change is the loss of the multi ice that lasts from year to year. This “old” ice is nearly gone and you can see it disappear in this …

You Are About to See a Whole Lot About Climate Change On-line and On-Air and it is Long Overdue

Many on-air and online news outlets are going to do a lot of climate change coverage this week. This came out of a meeting I attended a few months back at Columbia University and it was sponsored in part by the Columbia Journalism Review. The press, especially TV news, has done a horrible job of covering climate change. Mainly by ignoring it. When they have covered it, the stories were …

New Research Confirms It: The Warming is Us

The leading climate myth going around these days (I see it a lot on social media)  is that the record global warmth is just part of a natural cycle. It’s been shown in many ways that this is not possible for quite some time, but some people (not the science community) have held onto the “Little Ice Age” as evidence that the warming planet is from only natural oscillations. New …
