Oklahoma July Temp. Average Is Hottest of Any State-Ever

From the NCDC today: “Oklahoma’s statewide average temperature was the warmest monthly statewide average temperature on record for any state during any month.” That amazing statistic underscores just what kind of summer it has been across the U.S. and the records keep falling. The average temp. in Oklahoma based on all stations for the entire month of July was 88.9. degrees. This breaks the record of July 1954 of 88.1 …

Weekend Digest- New NASA App & Record Low Arctic Ice In July

I spent much of the week in Washington,DC for a meeting of a committee that looks at the science involved with the GOES R weather satellite that will be launched in 2015 (budget allowing!). GOES R will be a totally new generation of weather satellite and will change the way the planet is monitored for weather and climate. More about this soon but here are some of the interesting …

Baked Sooners

Oklahoma is the world leader in weather research and has the world’s best network of weather stations, called the Oklahoma Mesonet. Take a look at some of the data it has recorded this summer. The number of days with temps. above 100 is approaching the numbers seen during the awful heat wave of 1980. I was in Oklahoma City that summer and remember everyone running outside of the TV station …

Weekend Digest- Tropical Trouble, Melting Ice and Mainstream Scientists Speak Out

This is the weekly digest of Earth science news that I said would be posted every Friday. OK, so it’s a bit late but it is still the weekend and what follows is a summary of interesting tidbits I’ve seen this week on other science blogs etc. We begin with the great 2011 drought/heat wave: Deep Fried Texans Austin, Texas is happy to wave so long to July. …

Forbes Version of Science Is More Than A Little Deluded

Someone on twitter asked me about an op-ed in Forbes with the breath-taking title NEW NASA DATA BLOWS GAPING HOLE IN GLOBAL WARMING ALARMISM. With a title like that, you know right off the bat that this article is written for people looking for confirmation to their belief that ALL of the planet’s major science bodies are wrong and a very tiny handful of skeptics are right. Furthermore, this is …

Heat Wave At The North Pole Speeds Up The Big Melt

There was update from the National Snow and Ice Data Center this week regarding the summer melt of Arctic Ocean sea-ice. It’s beginning to look as if a new record low in ice extent is possible by the time the melting ends in early September, passing the all time low set in 2007. Here is the update from NSIDC: Overview of conditions As of July 17, 2011, Arctic sea …

Tom Vandyck Gets It Right

While I still see some of the “he said/ she said” type journalism on climate science in the U.S. media, I agree with the thrust of Tom Vandyck’s piece that the coverage of climate science is improving, and more accurately describes the overwhelming consensus. There are some notable exceptions, especially in smaller media markets, and of course on Rupert Murdoch’s outlets like Fox News and the Wall Street Journal (Including …

New Normals vs Old- State by State

NOAA released this data today, showing how the new climate normals (being released this month) compare with the old on a state by state basis. Here is part of the press release that accompanied it. Thanks for the heads up the the NWS HSV folks. NOAA PRESS RELEASE: According to the 1981-2010 normals to be released by NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) on July 1, temperatures across the United …

The New Normal- and yes it’s hotter.

I have spent the week here in Oklahoma City (home actually) at the American Meteorological Society’s 35th Conf. on Broadcast Meteorology. My wife and I have a home just a few blocks north of the location, so it’s been nice to have the annual meeting in our back yard. There are really not that many people on air who have  a background in atmospheric physics, and the AMS denotes …
