It’s Called A Haboob
Posted by Dan Satterfield
In case you have not seen the great haboob that hit Phoenix Tuesday night. It was caused by strong winds (over 55 knots) flowing out of thunderstorms . The video is pretty incredible. Scott Lindstrom has a great post showing the view from GOES of the Arizona storms as well with a nice MCV as a result. What’s an MCV? Read Scott’s post! Physicist Joe Romm has an interesting post (with more images) as well on Climate Progress.
Well of course the major media outlets will never call it a “Haboob”. Aside from containing the word “boob”, which most right-wingers are terrified of, it sounds vaguely Arabic, which will make them see Islamist conspiracies and terrorist attacks in weather patterns.
Actually we did call it a haboob on air here in Huntsville, AL.
“which will make them see Islamist conspiracies and terrorist attacks in weather patterns”
what do u mean by this?
for your information, haboob in arabic means the cold/cool wind. And it’s something good! it doesn’t mean hurricane. And its a slang.
I’m an arabic speaker, thats why i’m telling you this. we laugh at you when we hear the word in the news, you didn’t say the correct word.
As we did here in Memphis, at 5pm AND 10pm. Our anchor even wondered on air what the plural of the term was.
ROFL Jim!
