Science and Democracy II: Dumbing Ourselves to Death

Frank Adams has a must read article on the NPR web site.

He is absolutely right. We are totally failing in America to educate our young people in science. Don’t believe me? Attend any college graduation, and look at the nationality of those who are getting the PhD’s.
There is NO country called “America”. There is a country called “THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”.
This is fundamental. Canadians are “Americans’, Mexicans are “Americans”, as are many other cultures of human beings. There is a large collection of land mass on the face of the Planet Earth known as the “AMERICAS”.
We fail ourselves and our children when we opt not to refer properly to ourselves as Citizens of the United States of America, and to our Nation as THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. These words have total important meaning. Using words properly, as in this case, helps to clarify whom it is we are speaking about, and the business and matters of what specific nation we are speaking about.
Try this “We are totally failing in THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” to educate our young people in Science.”
This may seem quite picky on my part, but I will argue the point until I am blue in the face! Our national Leaders have failed us daily by this lazy speech, and failure to call our Nation and our Citizens by their proper names, is absolutely a major ingredient in the process, we refer to as “dumbing down”.
So which young “America” children are we failing? The children of Canada? The children of Mexico? The children of THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA?
If it is too much effort to write “THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, then write “U.S.O.A.”, and/or Citizens/People/Children of the “U.S.O.A.”
Thank you,
David
I doubt that anyone was confused. I like it my way and it’s my blog 😉
