Storm- By Tim Minchin

Tim Minchin is going to be at TAM (The Amazing Meeting) in London in the autumn and Stephen Fry himself is on the bill. Would dearly love to go to that but 400 quid a ticket plus transatlantic airfare is more than an ouch. In the been there done that category… Warning for very strong language and not suitable for under 13, but well worth watching…

Man Behind The Oregon Petition Headed To Congress???

Found out some interesting news today.  Art Robinson the man behind the so called “Oregon petition” has won the Republican Primary for Congress in Oregon’s 4th district. I showed a video last weekend at the climate seminar in Miami about that little myth. The petition was designed to make it look like thousands of scientists think climate change is a hoax. The reality is that the consensus is overwhelming. You …

Some Well Said Facts from America's Top Scientific Body

The top scientific body in the U.S. is the National Academies of Science. It’s the American version of the Royal Society in England, which is the world’s oldest scientific body (Once headed by Sir Isaac Newton). The National Academies today published three reports on climate change. I read one particular passage that was so well put, it was worth a blog post. It’s actually something that I have said many times in posts here. Just …

Oil Slick Entering the Gulf Loop Current (Trust me, that's bad)

The Gulf Loop current may very well be picking up the oil slick in the Gulf. This would bring the oil down through the Florida Keys and into the Gulf Stream. Eventually passing between Florida and the Bahamas. Oil in this area could cause severe damage to ocean reefs in the Keys and near the Bahamas. The ocean current models show the path of the loop current very well. This …

NASA & NOAA- Warmest April On Record. 34th In a Row Above Average.

This was actually expected by most of the science community, but it is now official.  This April was the warmest ever recorded on the instrumental record. Here is what NOAA said today: Global Highlights The combined global land and ocean average surface temperature for April 2010 was the warmest on record at 14.5°C (58.1°F), which is 0.76°C (1.37°F) above the 20th century average of 13.7°C (56.7°F). This was also the …

A Fascinating Day in Miami

I’m in Miami for a seminar on climate change.  It was put on by the Yale Forum on Climate and Media with funding from the Mccormick Foundation. I was the last presenter and I now have 24 hours to relax and enjoy Miami. The seminar was fantastic and every one of these (my third) I do brings new and really fascinating information. I have enough for several posts here over …

Two Excellent Books- Astrophysics and Climate Change

Ok, I know I shot myself in the foot with that title. Geek books! Run! Well, this post is for my steady readers then 😉 I’m finishing two of the best popular science (aka science for the masses) books I have read in quite awhile. I actually love reading these type of books, because a really good expert can make me understand something you already know in a much better …

Oil, Ash and Deadly Tornadoes

It’s been a busy month for those of us who forecast weather.  Tracking volcanic ash using upper level wind forecast and using ocean current models to track the growing oil slick in the Gulf. Today it was a little of all three. Oklahoma was hit by a swarm of tornadoes today. At least 4 are dead. Many people have lost there homes. Cars and large trucks were flipped in the …
