The Daily Mail Continues It's Record Of NEVER Getting a Story On Science Right
Posted by Dan Satterfield
The MAIL calls this a shelf cloud.
IT’s NOT.
It’s a Cumulonimbus capillatus.
Note to the MAIL: You have one of the World’s top experts on clouds. Pick up a copy of the CLOUD BOOK by Richard Hamblyn. It’s published by the MET OFFICE.
Oh, and here is a shelf cloud:

A real shelf cloud- courtesy of Tom Skilling, WGN Chicago (One of Americas greatest on air Meteorologists ever.)
All you had to do was ask somebody who knew something about clouds…
The soap box is now free….
man I’m not a met, and I knew that was a cumulonimbus cloud, except for the capillatus part lol
Love the cumulonimbus capillatus….I’ve only seen one myself and wished I had had a camera.
Love your soapbox π
Keep up the good work Dan. I keep telling my parents not to believe everything they read in the Mail as well.
Use of Soap box gratefully accepted. π
Wow, look at how structured it looks! Prominant updraft column, thick anvil (which i do believe is Cirrus Spissatus), and what I believe looks like Mammatus under the belly of this mesocyclonic windstorm. This my people is a great example of a supercell! Wonder how far out you could feel the coldness of the outflow boundary of that bohemith or however you spell it.
