Whether you’re curious about how to engage in science policy and want to learn the basics, or want to learn more about the fellowship opportunities AGU offers throughout the year, we have plenty of programs to help engage our members in science policy. Know Your Rights: Scientific Advocacy & Activism
Attorneys from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the Climate Science Legal Defense Fund (CSLDF) will discuss the legal rights and restrictions of U.S. scientists seeking to engage in the policymaking process, participate in a demonstration or activism, become involved with a political event, and more.

Collaborative Science – How Scientists Can Empower Communities
Join us for a luncheon panel as we discuss AGU Surging Waters’s report focusing on how science empowers communities impacted by severe weather events. We’ll discuss how scientists and communities collaborate in response to extreme flooding to make their towns and neighborhoods safer, more prepared and more informed. We will also discuss the role of government support in making these partnerships successful.

Scientific Integrity Policies and How to Use Them
Climate Science Legal Defense Fund (CSLDF) attorneys and the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) will discuss what scientists should know when faced with a potential scientific integrity issue, including what constitutes a violation of scientific integrity, filing a complaint, potential pitfalls, and more at this free luncheon.

Upcoming AGU Science Policy Opportunities

Voices for Science (Application due 1 February 2020) – Voices for Science helps scientists to address the critical need for communicating the value and impact of Earth and space science to key decision makers, journalists, and public audiences. The program provides scientists interested in science communications and outreach with specialized training and assistance to hone their skills over a 12-month period.

AGU Congressional Science Fellowship (Application due 15 January 2020) – The Congressional Science Fellowship (CSF) program places highly accomplished scientists in the offices of either an individual member of Congress or on a committee for one year. For four decades, AGU CSFs have been directly involved in water policy, climate research, energy conservation, and a range of other science-based issues, and have gone on to pursue a wide range of careers from science policy to academia.

Climate Science Day on Capitol Hill (June 2020) – AGU co-sponsors four annual Congressional Visits Days, which provide scientists with the opportunity to meet with their policymakers in Washington, D.C., or at home. Climate Science Day on Capitol Hill connects legislators with climate experts from their districts, to ensure policymakers receive the best possible climate science information from trusted sources.

 

CASE workshop (24-27 March 2020) – Each year, AGU sponsors one student member to attend the AAAS Catalyzing Advocacy in Science and Engineering (CASE) Workshop in Washington, D.C. The workshop teaches students about Congress, the federal budget, and science communication during a three-day course. It also allows students to see the process up close, network with science policy professionals, and collaborate with other students who are interested in similar issues.
