Hello from the tail end of the Alvin Science Verification Expedition, in which we worked to verify the submersible Alvin’s ability to carry scientists, their equipment, and samples to depths of 6500 meters.  The upshot: human-operated vehicle HOV Alvin is ready, willing, and able indeed. 

As were our shipboard scientists as they put the sub to use to make discoveries about the history, workings, and ecosystems at the depths of the Puerto Rican Trench and Mid-Cayman Rise — included David Davis, Ph.D. candidate from Rutgers University.  He’s the subject of the fourth I Was A Kid profile.
