Benjamin Keenan is a biogeochemist using a combination of geochemical proxies applied to lake sediment cores to investigate how the ancient lowland Maya interacted with their environment.

Project Description: The project will convert geochemical data and the archaeological site of Itzan (in Guatemala) into a high-fidelity visualisation using game engine technology to represent the changing population, vegetation, and climate of the ancient Maya over time. The project moves beyond conventional data visualisation to create an affectual experience that enables new ways for audiences to engage with complex patterns found in scientific data.
