GSA – Halfway through the annual meeting
These annual meetings of the Geological Society of America seem to fly by faster and faster. I’ve found that, through the years and as my career has developed, that I have less and less time for attending talks or contemplating research presented on posters. Instead, I spend my time sharing my own work, supporting students, networking and catching up with colleagues, and attending meetings for various groups and projects. Less …

Off to GSA
This morning I’m on a flight to Denver, for the 125th anniversary annual meeting of the Geological Society of America. The annual GSA meeting is a special time of year for me, and for many geology professionals across the country. It’s an intense half-week of talks, sharing, learning, networking, hanging out with old friends, meeting new friends, getting inspired, and hopefully inspiring others. It’s a time to mentor our best …

Friday folds: Simple shear and the unfolding of folds
The Friday fold combines a moment of insight on a field trip in the Archean Superior Province and a new paper published this month in the journal GEOLOGY.

Deformation in the Lake Vermillion Formation
Today, let’s go back to the Pike Dam, where we spent some lovely moments last week, agog at the lovely graded beds and flame structures visible there. In contrast, today we want to examine the deformational structures seen elsewhere at this same outcrop. There are folds and faults and joints and more exotic fare: tension gashes and Riedel shears. The deformation here is the youngest to affect the Vermillion District …

Primary structures in the Lake Vermilion Formation
Callan showcases some extraordinary depositional structures (graded bedding and flame structures) seen in Archean turbidites in the Superior province of northern Minnesota.

Digital images of the “Digital Geology Speed Dating” session at GSA
Justin Samuel at GSA sent me these images from the annual meeting in Charlotte. They show me demonstrating GigaPan technology at the Pardee Symposium called “Digital Geology Speed Dating”. With my colleagues Ron Schott and Jen Piatek, I suggested that GigaPans are a cool medium with readily obvious geologic usage for research, outreach, and education. I’m grateful to the session’s organizers, Declan De Paor, Steve Whitmeyer, and John Bailey, for …

Friday fold: Neoacadian Inner Piedmont trip, part IV: Migmatitic metagraywacke
The Friday fold comes from a stop on the “Neoacadian Inner Piedmont” field trip that Callan attended prior to the GSA meeting in Charlotte, North Carolina, last week.

Neoacadian Inner Piedmont trip, part II: more Walker Top
Today, I’ve got a batch of additional photos of the Walker Top Granite to share, variably mylonitized (sheared out under ductile conditions)… Nice garnets in some spots: Delta porphyroclast: Lovely sheared-out rocks…

Friday fold: Boomer Falls
The Friday fold is seen at one of the stops on Callan’s pre-GSA-Charlotte field trip: a small waterfall in North Carolina’s Inner Piedmont.

Granite dikes that have been folded and boudinaged
It seems like a good morning to return to Ontario, and to the Archean shear zones exposed at the Quetico/Wabigoon subprovince boundary of the Superior Craton. Readers will hopefully recall that I spent several days absorbing structural goodness from these rocks on a field trip before the Minneapolis GSA meeting last fall. The trip was led by Basil Tikoff, Bob Bauer, Dyanna Czeck, and Peter Hudleston. Our final Canadian stop …
