Another trio of 3D models
Posted by Callan Bentley
Here are three more of my Photoscan-generated, Sketchfab-hosted 3D models of rock samples:
Mud cracks in Tonoloway Formation tidal flat carbonates, Corridor H, West Virginia:
Diorite from the eastern Sierra Nevada of California:
Vein cross-cutting foliated & lineated gneiss, Blue Ridge basement complex, Virginia:
These are just spectacular (like the others you did), Callan. Would you be able to do microfossils like forams or conodonts with this method? I can imagine that many macro-fossil specimens would be perfect for this (with the right mounting). This would be amazing when used in conjunction with Bill Schmachtenberg’s digital project with the VMNH collections.
Great idea – I love it. The key would be the input photographs – getting a couple dozen images of the conodont or whatever from different angles. I’m not sure how that would be feasible, but perhaps some skilled microscopist could advise?
