Pipkrakes in the yard

Asbestiform ice is growing in our yard this week, with individual ice needles several inches long…
Note the substantial pebbles that have been lifted up by the growth of these things – they’re powerful little crystals.

I believe the Norwegian word telehiv (type of frost heave) summarizes this nicely (though typically thought of at larger scales). And yes, ice is very strong when C-axis is aligned coherently.
Used to see this all the time in Columbus – not recently.
I think this is so neat. And it’s nice to finally have a name for it.
Wild stuff, I’ve never seen anything like this before.
