What job would you do in space?

CNN has a weird quiz to help you find out. Apparently I’m the biodome gardener. Sounds fun to me, though my houseplants here on earth tend to either dry out or die from overwatering… Apparently this is part of a snazzy site that CNN is running called “Just Imagine“. The idea seems to be to speculate what life will be like in 2020. I don’t know how this made it …

One-way Mission to Mars

On a day when we recognize all the men and women that have given their lives for our country, Universe Today has an interesting article about how soldiers might serve, not only here on Earth, but in our exploration of the solar system. SFC William H. Ruth of the 101st Airborne Division has a decidedly outside-the-box idea: Send battle-hardened, strong-minded soldiers and marines on the long trips into space. We …

Lego Mars!

Targeted ads in gmail sometimes show me some awesome sites. I posted before about the chance to buy land on Mars, and now I learn that Lego has a Mars Mission set of toys! They even manage to slip a few facts in on the web site. For example, they have “transmissions from Mars” and one of them describes working in Valles Marineris, giving all its impressive stats. The Search for Life on Mars: Part 1

Pre-Space Age The prospect of life on Mars has tantalized humans for centuries. We long to find some proof that we are not alone, that the universe is not as empty as it seems, and so we look to the most Earth-like planet in our solar system for signs of life. Early astronomers quickly noticed that Mars shares some properties with the Earth. In 1783, William Herschel discussed the similarities …

Damn Dirty Apes … On Mars!

This just in from the BBC: Russia has announced that it plans to send monkeys to Mars! Although the idea conjures up images of a future Mars peopled by a race of hyper-intelligent chimpanzees*, it also makes sense. We want to know the physiological effects of such a long-duration flight, but nobody would want to send a human to do something so risky. So, it falls to the monkeys to …

Google + Virgin Galactic = Mars Colony

Big news! Google has teamed up with Virgin to form Project Virgle: the first human colony on Mars. It’s great to see companies like Google and Virgin looking toward the future and getting involved in space exploration. They certainly have the money to do it, and I think more and more of them are realizing that the publicity and potential revenue are well worth the initial cost. Click to find …

Mining Phobos and Deimos

Visiting the moon is one thing. It’s a difficult, complicated, dangerous, and exciting thing. But it’s also a thing that we have done before. Sending people to Mars is a whole new ballgame. Instead of a few days of travel, future Mars astronauts will likely be looking at a six month trip there, and at least as long to get back, with an extended stay on Mars in the middle. …
