raising the profile in the USA"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Landslide losses in the USA<\/h5>\n<p>The two dramatic landslides of the last few weeks in the USA has undoubtedly raised the profile of this natural hazard.\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2014\/04\/02\/steelhead-landslide-in-washington\/\">Oso landslide in Washington State<\/a> remains high on the news agenda, and was even visited by the President earlier this week.\u00a0 Meanwhile, the fascinating <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wunderground.com\/news\/wyoming-mudslide-20140410\">East Gros Ventre Butte landslide in Jackson Hole<\/a> continues to creep, with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jhnewsandguide.com\/news\/town_county\/life-crumbles-around-family\/article_021047a8-decd-58ef-82b5-726746552a26.html\">devastating impacts on the family who owned the house at the crest of the slide<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>These two events have suddenly driven a new level of interest in landslide losses in the USA, which may be a good outcome from these tragic events.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/news.nationalgeographic.com\/news\/2014\/04\/140422-surveying-american-landslides-interactive\/\">National Geographic<\/a> has produced a fantastic graphic illustrating the distribution of landslides across the USA since 2007:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9315\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/04\/14_04-USA-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9315\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9315 \" alt=\"landslide losses\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/04\/14_04-USA-1.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"403\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/04\/14_04-USA-1.jpg 861w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/04\/14_04-USA-1-300x189.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9315\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.nationalgeographic.com\/news\/2014\/04\/140422-surveying-american-landslides-interactive\/\">National Geographic<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>This graphic uses data that <a href=\"http:\/\/neptune.gsfc.nasa.gov\/hsb\/personnel\/index.php?id=462\">Dalia Kirschbaum<\/a> and colleagues at NASA have been collecting on <a href=\"http:\/\/sedac.ciesin.columbia.edu\/data\/set\/ndh-landslide-hazard-distribution\">landslide events around the world<\/a>.\u00a0 It shows reported landslides in the USA since 2007.\u00a0 Note that the <a href=\"http:\/\/news.nationalgeographic.com\/news\/2014\/04\/140422-surveying-american-landslides-interactive\/\">National Geographic page<\/a> has more detailed explanations of the distribution of the observed landslides, so I won&#8217;t attempt to repeat it here.\u00a0 However, in general reported landslide incidence is highest where there is a combination of steep terrain, high rainfall, active tectonic processes and people.\u00a0 Those four factors alone provide an explanation for most (but not all) of the landslides shown above.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, there has been increased interest in State and more local-level landslide inventories.\u00a0 So, for example, <a href=\"http:\/\/koin.com\/2014\/04\/23\/landslide-database-now-includes-46000-locations\/\">this article describes the incidence of landslides in Oregon<\/a>, and includes this map of landslides across the state:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9316\" style=\"width: 603px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/04\/14_04-USA-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9316\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9316 \" alt=\"landslide losses\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/04\/14_04-USA-2.jpg\" width=\"593\" height=\"323\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/04\/14_04-USA-2.jpg 593w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/04\/14_04-USA-2-300x163.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 593px) 100vw, 593px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9316\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"http:\/\/koin.com\/2014\/04\/23\/landslide-database-now-includes-46000-locations\/\">KOIN6<\/a> and Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>A key issue in the US media is why there is no national scale landslide mapping programme in the USA &#8211; a good question!\u00a0 In my view landslide work in the US has been grossly underfunded compared with other hazards (this article notes that the entire landslide programme at Federal Level costs $3.5 million per year &#8211; in comparison the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2013\/09\/26\/mining-industry-costs\/\">Bingham Canyon landslide alone is thought to have cost about $1 billion<\/a>), although the landslide teams at the USGS and elsewhere are world class.\u00a0 In addition, there is little doubt that excellent and comparatively low cost landslide programmes at the State level <a href=\"www.nbcnews.com\/news\/investigations\/how-politics-buries-science-landslide-mapping-n73256\">have been killed off for political purposes<\/a>.\u00a0 A subsidiary question is whether <a href=\"http:\/\/news.discovery.com\/tech\/gear-and-gadgets\/could-a-warning-system-save-lives-in-a-landslide-140423.htm\">warning systems in the most dangerous places could save lives<\/a>.\u00a0 The answer is of course yes &#8211; principles and techniques of landslide warning systems are well-established and have proven to be effective elsewhere.\u00a0 They are however expensive and labour-intensive.\u00a0 Unfortunately, both the Jackson Hole and Oso landslides will soon slip from the memory of most, and I fear that little will change.\u00a0 Expect further hand-wringing when the next large event occurs &#8211; and given that we appear to be entering <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/products\/analysis_monitoring\/enso_advisory\/ensodisc.html\">El Nino conditions<\/a>, that may not be too far in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Landslides are probably the most preventable of all natural disasters.\u00a0 At a national level there is no excuse for failing to manage them properly.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Landslide losses in the USA have come into focus in light of the slides at Oso and Jackson Hole.
