{"id":9198,"date":"2014-04-18T08:15:04","date_gmt":"2014-04-18T08:15:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=9198"},"modified":"2014-04-18T08:15:04","modified_gmt":"2014-04-18T08:15:04","slug":"pathe-news-historic-landslide-films","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2014\/04\/18\/pathe-news-historic-landslide-films\/","title":{"rendered":"Pathe news &#8211; historic landslide films"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Pathe News<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/04\/14_04-pathe-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-9201\" alt=\"Pathe News\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/04\/14_04-pathe-1.jpg\" width=\"222\" height=\"324\" \/><\/a>British Pathe News was a company that generated short (four minute) films summarising the latest news, which were then shown in cinemas in the UK and elsewhere.\u00a0 The company was active from 1910 to 1970, before being killed off by television news coverage.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britishpathe.com\/\">The archive<\/a> is clearly a wonderful source of information about world events over this period.\u00a0 In the last few days, British Pathe have uploaded about 88,000 films onto a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCGp4u0WHLsK8OAxnvwiTyhA\">Youtube Channel<\/a>.\u00a0 The films are genuinely amazing &#8211; I thoroughly recommend a browse if you have an hour or two.<\/p>\n<h5>Pathe News and landslides<\/h5>\n<p>Unsurprisingly, situated within the archive are various films showing landslides.\u00a0 I will highlight just a small number here:<\/p>\n<p>There is some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=c1-MA3xeL8U\">spectacular footage<\/a> of the aftermath of a rockslide-induced tsunami in Norway in 1936, which the film indicates killed over 70 people:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Norwegian Landslide (1936)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/c1-MA3xeL8U?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>..<\/p>\n<p>There is also a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4a21zZXhEek\">nice piece of footage<\/a> of the aftermath of a landslide on the Adriatic Coast in Italy in 1956, which knocked a steam train into the sea:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Landslide Havoc (1956)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4a21zZXhEek?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>..<\/p>\n<p>There is some quite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=l6KSx3LBH2A\">dramatic footage <\/a>of the aftermath of a large rockslide in Los Angeles, USA in 1937:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Million Ton Landslide (1937)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/l6KSx3LBH2A?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>..<\/p>\n<p>And finally there is some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-Nr-6uxM7y8\">desperately sad footage<\/a> of the aftermath of the 1<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/10\/21\/remembering-the-aberfan-disaster-45-years-ago-today\/\">966 Aberfan landslide disaster<\/a> in Wales:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"This Is Tragedy (1966)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-Nr-6uxM7y8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the last week Pathe News has uploaded 88,000 archive news films from 1910 to 1970.
