{"id":9132,"date":"2014-04-16T07:34:24","date_gmt":"2014-04-16T07:34:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=9132"},"modified":"2014-04-16T07:34:24","modified_gmt":"2014-04-16T07:34:24","slug":"arroumd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2014\/04\/16\/arroumd\/","title":{"rendered":"Arroumd &#8211; an interesting rock avalanche in Morocco"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>The Arroumd Rock Avalanche<\/h5>\n<p>An interesting paper has just been published in the <a href=\"http:\/\/gsabulletin.gsapubs.org\/\">Bulletin of the GSA<\/a> by Philip Hughes\u00a0and colleagues (<a href=\"http:\/\/gsabulletin.gsapubs.org\/content\/early\/2014\/03\/19\/B30894.1.abstract\">Hughes <em>et al.<\/em> 2014<\/a>) on the Arroumd Rock Avalanche in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco.\u00a0 This is a very interesting feature, very clearly visible on Google Earth:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/04\/14_04-Aroumd-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9133\" alt=\"Arroumd\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/04\/14_04-Aroumd-1.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/04\/14_04-Aroumd-1.jpg 1528w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/04\/14_04-Aroumd-1-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/04\/14_04-Aroumd-1-1024x640.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>..<\/p>\n<p>The village labelled Aremd, which seems to be more commonly known as Arroumd, is built on the toe of the landslide deposit.\u00a0 The landslide itself have originated from the steep slopes in the background, traveled down the side valley and been deposited in the valley floor and in part in the main valley.\u00a0 The resulting deposit has blocked the main valley to a degree. The image below (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.adventurecenter.com\/trips\/mt-toubkal-long-weekend\">from here<\/a>) shows the landslide deposit and the village from upstream &#8211; there appears to be the scar from a breach event on the left side; the boulders that form the avalanche are clearly visible to the right of the town:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9134\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/04\/14_04-Aroumd-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9134\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9134\" alt=\"Arroumd\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/04\/14_04-Aroumd-2.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"428\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/04\/14_04-Aroumd-2.jpg 800w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/04\/14_04-Aroumd-2-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9134\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adventurecenter.com\/trips\/mt-toubkal-long-weekend\">https:\/\/www.adventurecenter.com\/trips\/mt-toubkal-long-weekend<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">..<\/p>\n<p>This deposit has been discussed by geologists for over 130 years, with most interpretations indicating that this debris was the moraine from an ancient glacier (very often rock avalanche deposits have been interpreted as having a glacial origin).\u00a0 More recently, Hughes <em>et al. <\/em>(2011) first suggested that the deposit might have a landslide origin; this study involved detailed mapping to investigate whether that hypothesis might be correct.<\/p>\n<h5>A complex geomorphic history at Arroumd<\/h5>\n<p>The conclusion from the mapping and dating of the deposits is that this is an area with a very complex geomorphic history.\u00a0 Three moraines are present in the valley, but also present are two course, boulder-dominated deposits that are interpreted as having a rock avalanche origin.\u00a0 This suggests at least two major landslide events, which have in turn modified the older moraines.\u00a0 These two major rock avalanche deposits have both been dated to 4,500 years BP (+\/-500 years), suggesting that they occurred quite close together in time (which is of course quite common for large rockslope failures).<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, there is no simple geomorphic indicator of the likely trigger of rock avalanches, and <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2013\/11\/06\/landslide-trigger\/\">many such failures occur without a trigger.<\/a>\u00a0 Thus, any discussion of a likely trigger event for the Arroumd Rock Avalanche is speculative.\u00a0 In this case, <a href=\"http:\/\/gsabulletin.gsapubs.org\/content\/early\/2014\/03\/19\/B30894.1.abstract\">Hughes <em>et al.<\/em> (2014)<\/a> suggest that the proximity of the nearby, active\u00a0Tizi n\u2019Test fault may well be the culprit.\u00a0 I think that it would now be really interesting and worthwhile to trench the fault to see if there is a movement event with a similar date.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, <a href=\"http:\/\/gsabulletin.gsapubs.org\/content\/early\/2014\/03\/19\/B30894.1.abstract\">Hughes <em>et al.<\/em> (2014)<\/a> point out that Arroumd is not the only valley-blocking rock avalanche in this part of the Atlas Mountains &#8211; indeed there is an even more spectacular example to the south at Lac d\u2019Ifni, clearly evident on Google Earth:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/04\/14_04-Aroumd-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9170\" alt=\"Arroumd\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/04\/14_04-Aroumd-3.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/04\/14_04-Aroumd-3.jpg 1528w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/04\/14_04-Aroumd-3-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/04\/14_04-Aroumd-3-1024x640.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>..<\/p>\n<p>In this case the landslide has blocked the valley and has not breached, allowing a lake to form.\u00a0 This lake is now mostly filled with sediments, leaving just the small remnant Lac d\u2019Ifni behind.<\/p>\n<h5>References<\/h5>\n<p>Hughes, P.D., Fenton, C.R., and Gibbard, P.L., 2011, Quaternary glaciations of the Atlas Mountains, North Africa, in Ehlers, J., Gibbard, P.L., and Hughes, P.D., eds., Quaternary Glaciations\u2014Extent and Chronology, Part IV: A Closer Look: Amsterdam, Elsevier, p. 1071\u20131080.<\/p>\n<p>Hughes, P.D., Fink, D., Fletcher, W.J. and Hannah, G. 2014.
