{"id":88,"date":"2010-06-18T08:07:00","date_gmt":"2010-06-18T08:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2010\/06\/18\/a-week-of-landslides-around-the-world\/"},"modified":"2010-10-21T13:35:23","modified_gmt":"2010-10-21T17:35:23","slug":"a-week-of-landslides-around-the-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2010\/06\/18\/a-week-of-landslides-around-the-world\/","title":{"rendered":"A week of landslides around the world"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Alongside the continuing <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/wp-content\/scripts\/daveslandslideblog.blogspot.com.bouncer.php\/daveslandslideblog.blogspot.com\/2010\/06\/attabad-locals-taking-situation-into.html\">Attabad crisis<\/a>, here is a summary of the last week in landslide events (in no particular order).&nbsp; The list is not exhaustive by any account, but these are the stories that caught my eye:<br \/><b><br \/><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>1.The Oliver debris flow in Canada<\/b><br \/>I covered this event in a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/wp-content\/scripts\/daveslandslideblog.blogspot.com.bouncer.php\/daveslandslideblog.blogspot.com\/2010\/06\/strange-similarity-between-attabad-and.html\">post or two earlier in the week<\/a>.&nbsp; It is now clear that the trigger was the overtopping and eventual failure (through a breach) of a small earthen dam high in the catchment (image from <a href=\"http:\/\/oliverbc.ca\/\">here<\/a>):<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/10_06-Oliver-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/10_06-Oliver-2.jpg\" width=\"474\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>The authorities <a href=\"http:\/\/news.google.com\/news\/url?sa=t&amp;ct2=us%2F0_0_s_29_0_t&amp;ct3=MAA4AEgdUABqAnVz&amp;usg=AFQjCNEfogekexelTwDVcN6eKpkIDzZQ5Q&amp;cid=17593762616473&amp;ei=BxgbTKj7GNbY-QaTsvRF&amp;rt=SEARCH&amp;vm=STANDARD&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ctvbc.ctv.ca%2Fservlet%2Fan%2Flocal%2FCTVNews%2F20100617%2Fbc_slide_warnings_100617%2F20100617%3Fhub%3DBritishColumbiaHome\">were warned by a hiker<\/a> that the lake was overtopping two days before the failure.&nbsp; It appears that there is now a great deal of soul searching occurring in Canada regarding the safety of these old and often poorly maintained structures.<\/p>\n<p><b>2. A deadly landslide in Burma<\/b><br \/>No complaints please &#8211; I will not be drawn into using the other name for Burma imposed by the illegal and immoral junta that runs that country.&nbsp; Anyway, Bangladesh and Burma both suffered very heavy rainfall this week, triggering landslides across a wide area.&nbsp; In Burma a slide killed 56 people in <span>Maungtaw and Buthidaung townships in Rakhine state, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/news.xinhuanet.com\/english2010\/world\/2010-06\/18\/c_13356624.htm\">Xinhua<\/a>.<\/span><br \/><span><br \/><\/span><br \/><b><span>3. Deadly landslides in Bangladesh<\/span><\/b><br \/><span>Meanwhile the same rainstorm caused chaos across a large part of the Cox&#8217;s Bazaarand Bandarban areas of Bangladesh, with multiple landslides killing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thepeninsulaqatar.com\/s.-asia\/philippines\/54073-rescue-workers-reach-bangla-landslide-victims.html\">at least 55 people<\/a>.&nbsp; As is so often the case, <a href=\"http:\/\/nation.ittefaq.com\/issues\/2010\/06\/18\/news0364.htm\">the blame<\/a> is being laid at the door of deforestation and slope cutting.<\/span><br \/><b><span><br \/><\/span><\/b><br \/><b><span>4. Two slope accidents in China<\/span><\/b><br \/><span>China also suffered two terrible slope accidents this week. <a href=\"http:\/\/news.xinhuanet.com\/english2010\/china\/2010-06\/16\/c_13352079.htm\">In the first<\/a>, on Monday, 24 people were killed when a debris flow hit vehicles on a road in <\/span><span>Nanping, in eastern Fujian Province.&nbsp; <a href=\"http:\/\/news.xinhuanet.com\/english2010\/china\/2010-06\/15\/c_13351739.htm\">In the second<\/a>, on Tuesday, a 40,000 cubic metre rockfall occurred at a <\/span><span>hydroelectric project construction site in Pengta Town,  Kangding County in Sichuan, killing 23 people.&nbsp; Meanwhile, as a I write, <a href=\"http:\/\/news.xinhuanet.com\/english2010\/china\/2010-06\/18\/c_13356746.htm\">reports suggest<\/a> that another slide in China today has killed <\/span>up to five people in Taohua Village, Chun&#8217;an County in Zhejiang Province.<br \/><span><br \/><\/span><br \/><b><span>5. An interesting hit pit wall collapse in Australia<\/span><\/b><br \/><span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/stories\/2010\/06\/18\/2930789.htm?section=justin\">ABC News<\/a> carries a story today about a large scale high pit wall collapse in the Savage River iron ore in Tasmania:<\/span><br \/><span><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/10_06-Tasmania.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/10_06-Tasmania.jpg\" width=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><span><br \/><\/span><br \/>Note the excavator at the pit bottom for scale.&nbsp; The slide is reportedly 140,000 cubic metres in volume.&nbsp; There were no injuries or fatalities in this event.<br \/><b><br \/><\/b><br \/><b>6.
