A slow avalanche in Italy<\/h5>\n<p>Whilst I don&#8217;t usually feature snow avalanches on this blog, this one is worth a look.\u00a0 It is a slow avalanche (the picture above is a screenshot from the film) that was captured a few days ago in Passeiertal in Sudtirol, Italy and is on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=f5waSw2mMfY\">Youtube<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Lawine Passeier S\u00fcdtirol - Valanga Alto Adige - Avalanche South Tyrol Pill Moos Beibach Italy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/f5waSw2mMfY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>..<\/p>\n<p>The interesting aspect of this avalanche is the transition from a rapid flow into a creeping slide.\u00a0 Note the enormous momentum behind the slow phase of the avalanche,which was able to fell trees and small buildings with ease.\u00a0 The larger buildings must be very well-built!\u00a0 It is interesting to note the similarities with the transition in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=E28_3uj9K0g\">Mount Dixon rock avalanche<\/a> from last year (see my posts <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2013\/02\/12\/the-full-video-of-the-mount-dixon-rock-avalanche-from-aoraki-mount-cook-national-park-in-new-zealand\/\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2013\/02\/24\/an-intrepretation-of-the-mount-dixon-rock-avalanche-in-new-zealand-using-satellite-imagery\/\">here<\/a>), which also transitioned from a flow to a creeping mass:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Mt Dixon Rock Fall 21\/01\/2013\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/E28_3uj9K0g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>..<\/p>\n<p>Several people brought this one to my attention &#8211; thanks to you all.<\/p>\n<h5>2.
