{"id":7919,"date":"2014-02-02T18:53:03","date_gmt":"2014-02-02T18:53:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=7919"},"modified":"2014-02-02T18:53:03","modified_gmt":"2014-02-02T18:53:03","slug":"jalan-kenanga-malaysia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2014\/02\/02\/jalan-kenanga-malaysia\/","title":{"rendered":"Jalan Kenanga: A video of a retaining wall failure in Malaysia"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Jalan Kenanga (Ho Ching Yuen) retaining wall video<\/h5>\n<p>This isn&#8217;t a new video, but I haven&#8217;t come across it before.\u00a0 It shows the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5xwMCWrGd5M\">progressive failure of a retaining wall<\/a> at Ho Ching Yuen, which I believe is more commonly known as Jalan Kenanga, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Retaining Wall failure at Ho Ching Yuen\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5xwMCWrGd5M?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>..<\/p>\n<h5>Some observations<\/h5>\n<p>If you can, play it with the sound on &#8211; it is fascinating to hear the bangs and crashes as the structural elements fail to generate the rapid movement event.\u00a0 It is also interesting to note that the ground behind the wall appears to have already collapsed at the time of failure, as the screenshot below shows:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/02\/14_02-KL-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7920\" alt=\"Jalan Kenanga\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/02\/14_02-KL-1.png\" width=\"608\" height=\"454\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/02\/14_02-KL-1.png 608w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/02\/14_02-KL-1-300x224.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 608px) 100vw, 608px\" \/><\/a>..<\/p>\n<p>I think, but don&#8217;t know for certain, that this event is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestar.com.my\/Story\/?file=\/2009\/7\/27\/central\/4396794&amp;sec=central\">one reported here<\/a>.\u00a0 If so, this appears to be what happened, in July 2009:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Eyewitness Umihani Sudin, a resident at the JKR quarters affected by the cave-in, said the road had gradually collapsed at 4.30pm on Saturday and, two hours later, a large section of the area near her home was literally swallowed by a large gaping hole near the construction site of a wholesale mall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe saw with our own eyes how the road sank and the project\u2019s retaining wall had given way,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She was referring to the project site of Kenanga Wholesale City in Jalan Merlimau, off Jalan Kenanga, in Cheras, with the San Peng flats in the background, where part of it had caved in last Saturday evening.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The article blames a burst water pipe for the failure.\u00a0 That is possible, but it could also be that inadequate design of the piles led to deformation that in turn ruptured the pipe.\u00a0 In other words, the burst pipe could well be a symptom rather than the cause of the failure.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In Jalan Kenanga in Malaysia in 2009, a large retaining wall collapsed at a construction site.
