{"id":7756,"date":"2014-01-13T08:04:28","date_gmt":"2014-01-13T08:04:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=7756"},"modified":"2014-01-13T08:04:28","modified_gmt":"2014-01-13T08:04:28","slug":"dart-valley-landslide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2014\/01\/13\/dart-valley-landslide\/","title":{"rendered":"The Dart Valley landslide in New Zealand"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Dart Valley Landslide<\/h5>\n<p>In the last two weeks there has been some interest in New Zealand in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stuff.co.nz\/southland-times\/news\/9581857\/New-lake-blocks-Dart-River-track\">landslide that blocked the Dart Valley on South Island<\/a> on 4th January, creating a large lake.\u00a0 Initially there was some concern that this landslide dam might suffer a breach event, but fortunately the water overtopped the landslide deposit without a major failure.\u00a0 The landslide is a well-known feature (<a href=\"http:\/\/images.gns.cri.nz\/shop\/photolib\/showImage.jsp?src=43952\">GNS have a long-standing image of it on their website<\/a>), situated in the\u00a0Te Koroka \/ slip stream area, and located at -44.587,168.332.\u00a0 It is easily identifiable on Google Earth from an image in August 2011:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/01\/14_01-Dart.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7757\" alt=\"Dart Valley\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/01\/14_01-Dart-e1389597761894.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"440\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>..<\/p>\n<p>The January 2014 movement event is just the most recent of a succession of landslides at this site &#8211; it has even been written up in a GNS Science report (Thomas and Cox 2009), although sadly I cannot find this online.\u00a0 Several news stories have good images of the landslide during this recent event, including this one from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stuff.co.nz\/the-press\/news\/9581270\/Landslide-blocks-Dart-River\">The Press<\/a>:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7758\" style=\"width: 628px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/01\/14_01-Dart-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7758\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7758\" alt=\"Dart Valley\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/01\/14_01-Dart-2.jpg\" width=\"618\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/01\/14_01-Dart-2.jpg 618w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/01\/14_01-Dart-2-300x174.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 618px) 100vw, 618px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7758\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">http:\/\/www.stuff.co.nz\/the-press\/news\/9581270\/Landslide-blocks-Dart-River<\/p><\/div>\n<p>..<\/p>\n<p>The lake that developed reached a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scoop.co.nz\/stories\/AK1401\/S00074\/update-on-the-dart-valley-landslide.htm\">maximum length of over 3 km<\/a> and is over 20 m deep.\u00a0 Aerial imagery suggests that this is quite an impressive feature:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7759\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/01\/14_01-Dart-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7759\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7759\" alt=\"Dart Valley\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/01\/14_01-Dart-3.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"332\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/01\/14_01-Dart-3.jpg 500w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/01\/14_01-Dart-3-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7759\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">http:\/\/www.scene.co.nz\/new-track-around-dart-valley-lake&#8211;\/314404a1.page<\/p><\/div>\n<p>..<\/p>\n<p>The major impacts of the landslide has been the inundation of a hiking track along the valley, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scene.co.nz\/new-track-around-dart-valley-lake--\/314404a1.page\">which has now been rerouted<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.odt.co.nz\/news\/queenstown-lakes\/287428\/jet-boats-return-dart-following-landslip\">temporary suspension of jet-boating downstream<\/a>.\u00a0 The landslide dam is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.odt.co.nz\/news\/queenstown-lakes\/287428\/jet-boats-return-dart-following-landslip\">not considered to pose a major risk.<\/a>\u00a0 However, the silt generated by the erosion of the landslide has also caused the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stuff.co.nz\/southland-times\/news\/9596565\/Landslide-alters-colour-of-Lake-Wakatipu\">colour of the water in Lake Wakatipu<\/a> to change to a blue-green colour.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, there is a lovely gallery of images of the landslide and the valley below from two years ago <a href=\"http:\/\/imgur.com\/a\/UKRCe\">located here,<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southernalpsphotography.com\/Tramping\/Aspiring-Region\/Marion-Plateau-Mt-Lydia\/i-srsnKf8\">another one can be found here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Reference<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Thomas, J.S. and Cox, S,C. 2009. 42 years Evolution of Slip Stream Landslide and Fan, Dart River, New Zealand.
