{"id":7723,"date":"2014-01-09T07:36:02","date_gmt":"2014-01-09T07:36:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=7723"},"modified":"2014-01-09T07:36:02","modified_gmt":"2014-01-09T07:36:02","slug":"abaetetuba","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2014\/01\/09\/abaetetuba\/","title":{"rendered":"Remarkable new video of a riverbank collapse (?) event in Abaetetuba, Brazil"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PSPzIWjGRaU&#038;sns=tw<\/p>\n<h5>Abaetetuba or Abadetetub?<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PSPzIWjGRaU&amp;sns=tw\">The above very interesting video has appeared on Youtube<\/a>, showing a ground collapse event in Brazil.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PSPzIWjGRaU&amp;sns=tw\">Youtube video page<\/a> suggests that this happened at &#8220;Abadetetub, Brazil &#8220;.\u00a0 I cannot find such a place, so I suspect that it is Abaetetuba:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/01\/14_01-Abaetetuba-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7724\" alt=\"Abaetetuba\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/01\/14_01-Abaetetuba-1.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"378\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/01\/14_01-Abaetetuba-1.jpg 1116w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/01\/14_01-Abaetetuba-1-300x177.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/01\/14_01-Abaetetuba-1-1024x606.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h5>Sinkhole or riverbank collapse?<\/h5>\n<p>A second uncertainty lies in the description of the incident, which is &#8220;The dramatic incident occurred when a sinkhole suddenly opened on a street in Abadetetub, Brazil on Saturday destroying 13 homes&#8221;.\u00a0 To me this is unlikely, based on the images, although I cannot say for certain.\u00a0 I suspect, but do not know for definite, that this is a progressive failure in fine sediments on the banks of the river, similar to <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2010\/10\/29\/an-amazing-landslide-video-from-manaus-in-brazil\/\">this earlier example from Manuas in Brazil<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Desmoronamento no Porto Chibat\u00e3o em Manaus\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9cf6nR4X894?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The news coverage of this most recent landslide has focused on the remarkable way in which a woman saved her child by throwing them from a window.\u00a0 This is highlighted in the video.\u00a0 The woman, who was pregnant at the time, also survived.<\/p>\n<p>Has anyone seen the unedited version of this footage, or some photographs of the aftermath?<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new video has emerged on Youtube, showing a ground collapse event in Abaetetuba, Brazil.
