{"id":7393,"date":"2013-12-13T02:13:19","date_gmt":"2013-12-13T02:13:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=7393"},"modified":"2019-05-16T12:55:37","modified_gmt":"2019-05-16T12:55:37","slug":"canary-islands-tsunami","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2013\/12\/13\/canary-islands-tsunami\/","title":{"rendered":"Killing off the Canary Islands landslide megatsunami scare"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"float: left;padding: 5px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.researchblogging.org\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0\" src=\"http:\/\/www.researchblogging.org\/public\/citation_icons\/rb2_large_gray.png\" alt=\"ResearchBlogging.org\" \/><\/a><\/span><br \/>\nFor those of us working on and researching natural hazards, one topic repeatedly comes up at social events.\u00a0 The conversation usually goes like this:<\/p>\n<p>New Acquaintance: &#8220;So what do you do?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Me: &#8220;I research natural hazards, and in particular landslides&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>NA: &#8220;Oh &#8211; is it true that one of the Canary Islands volcanoes is going to collapse in a giant landslide?\u00a0 I was told that it&#8217;ll cause a tsunami that&#8217;ll devastate the coasts of Europe and America&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Me: &#8220;Excuse me &#8211; I&#8217;m just going to bang my head on the table&#8230;&#8221; [thump!]<\/p>\n<p>The question of course refers to a scare a few years ago, based on a peer-reviewed paper, that a flank collapse of Cumbre Vieja volcano on the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands could collapse, generating a megatsunami that would initially be about 1,000 metres high, and would still be about 50 metres high when it reached for example the eastern seaboard of the USA (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Megatsunami\">Wikipedia has quite a nice article on megatsunamis if you are interested<\/a>).\u00a0 It is fair to say that in my experience there is agreement that such a flank collapse could occur (and there is lots of evidence that such events have happened in the past), but the level of support for the megatsunami hypothesis is, shall we say, somewhat lacking within the scientific community.\u00a0 There is a nice evaluation of the work by <a href=\"www.drgeorgepc.com\/TsunamiMegaEvaluation.html\">Dr George Pararas-Carayannis<\/a>, which concludes that:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The threat of mega tsunami generation from collapses of oceanic island stratovolcanoes has been greatly overstated. No mega tsunamis can be expected&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A key issue here is the mechanics of the landslide.\u00a0 To generate a very large tsunami, this slide would have to happen very fast and as an essentially coherent block.\u00a0 Remember that this is a landslide of 500 cubic kilometres &#8211; we do not think that very, very large landslides usually behave like this. The chances are that a collapse would occur in stages over a longer time period, which would generate a much smaller wave.\u00a0 Most scientists recognise that the single, intact block collapsing very fast idea is theoretically possible, but that it is the extreme end-member of a wide range of scenarios, and thus is highly unlikely.\u00a0 There are other issues too (like where are the tsunami deposits from other megatsunamis given that we know that previous collapses have occurred? A tsunami on this scale should leave deposits that would be very easy to map).\u00a0 Unfortunately, although most landslide scientists view the likelihood of a single coherent landslide as being very low, the actual evidence to support that view in the case of these types of landslides has not been strong..<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, despite these rebuttals the story has had remarkable traction.\u00a0 Take<a href=\"http:\/\/www.virginmedia.com\/science-nature\/natural-world\/natural-disasters-waiting-to-happen.php\"> this page on Virgin Media for example<\/a>, which has this wonderful (?) image:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7394\" style=\"width: 441px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2013\/12\/13_12-tsunami.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7394\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7394\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2013\/12\/13_12-tsunami.jpg\" alt=\"http:\/\/www.virginmedia.com\/science-nature\/natural-world\/natural-disasters-waiting-to-happen.php\" width=\"431\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2013\/12\/13_12-tsunami.jpg 431w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2013\/12\/13_12-tsunami-300x208.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 431px) 100vw, 431px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7394\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">http:\/\/www.virginmedia.com\/science-nature\/natural-world\/natural-disasters-waiting-to-happen.php<\/p><\/div>\n<p>And text that says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;A colossal wave caused by a chunk of rock the size of the Isle of Man breaking off La Palma in the Canary Islands, will one day devastate Southern Europe and the entire East coast of America. Scientists believe this disaster is already way overdue. When it does come, it will cause a mega tsunami that will hit with the power of an atomic bomb travelling at the speed of a jumbo jet.\u00a0 Starting off at 2000ft, the giant wave will still be 150ft high by the time it reaches the other side of the Atlantic, destroying everything in its wake and affecting up to 100 million people.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Given the ridiculousness of this sort of statement (and there are worse examples out there), it is good to see a new paper that erodes the case for the megatsunami still further.\u00a0 This paper, Hunt <em>et al.<\/em> (2013) has just been published in the journal <a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/ggge.20138\/abstract\">Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems<\/a> (sadly the article is behind a paywall).\u00a0 The paper presents a very detailed analysis of the deposits left on the sea floor by Canary Island flank collapses.\u00a0 The research is meticulous and comprehensive.\u00a0 The authors note that the sea floor deposits record eight volcanic flank collapse events, the largest of which was about 350 cubic kilometres.\u00a0 However, the key element is that each deposit is formed from a series of subunits, each of which can be clearly differentiated from other subunits based on the geochemistry of the materials that they contain.\u00a0 So, the interpretation by the authors, which sounds very sensible to me, is that each subunit represents a different phase of the collapse event.\u00a0 In other words, each of these major collapses did not occur as a single, coherent block, but as a series of sections one after the other.\u00a0 If you want an analogy, then what better example than the famous <a href=\"http:\/\/www.landslideblog.org\/2008\/05\/sichuan-what-does-landslide-look-like.html\">1993 Pantai Remis landslide in Malaysia<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Malaysia Landslide\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/H6Ma0SVjMHA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The implications are clear.\u00a0 Previous flank collapses have occurred as a series of distinct events rather than as a single coherent block.\u00a0 Each of these could have been able to generate a very large wave, and even a local tsunami.\u00a0 However, they would not have generated a megatsunami.\u00a0 There is no reason to believe that a future event will behave differently, so this scare should be consigned to the garbage can once and for all.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reference<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Z3988\" title=\"ctx_ver=Z39.88-2004&amp;rft_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Ajournal&amp;rft.jtitle=Geochemistry%2C+Geophysics%2C+Geosystems&amp;rft_id=info%3Adoi%2F10.1002%2Fggge.20138&amp;rfr_id=info%3Asid%2Fresearchblogging.org&amp;rft.atitle=Multistage+collapse+of+eight+western+Canary+Island+landslides+in+the+last+1.5+Ma%3A+Sedimentological+and+geochemical+evidence+from+subunits+in+submarine+flow+deposits&amp;rft.issn=&amp;rft.date=2013&amp;rft.volume=14&amp;rft.issue=7&amp;rft.spage=2159&amp;rft.epage=2181&amp;rft.artnum=http%3A%2F%2Fonlinelibrary.wiley.com%2Fdoi%2F10.1002%2Fggge.20138%2Fabstract&amp;rft.au=J.E.+Hunt&amp;rft.au=R.B.+Wynn&amp;rft.au=P.J.+Talling&amp;rft.au=D.G.+Masson&amp;rfe_dat=bpr3.included=1;bpr3.tags=Geosciences%2Ctsunami%2C+volcano%2C+landslide%2C+hazard%2C+risk\">J.E.
