{"id":6951,"date":"2013-10-02T07:16:46","date_gmt":"2013-10-02T07:16:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=6951"},"modified":"2013-10-02T07:16:46","modified_gmt":"2013-10-02T07:16:46","slug":"a-selfless-act-of-bravery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2013\/10\/02\/a-selfless-act-of-bravery\/","title":{"rendered":"A selfless act of bravery &#8211; a father saves his daughter by shielding her with his body"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/nation\/nationnow\/la-na-nn-hiker-family-killed-a-colorado-family-20131001,0,64030.story?track=rss&amp;utm_source=twitterfeed&amp;utm_medium=twitter\">Further information is emerging<\/a> about the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2013\/10\/01\/a-rockslide-on-mount-priceton\/\">fatal landslide on the flanks of Mount Princeton<\/a> in Colorado on Monday, which killed five hikers from the same family.\u00a0 The sole survivor is 13-year-old Gracie Johnson, who was extracted from the debris with a broken leg.\u00a0 She has told the rescue staff that her father, Dwayne Johnson, threw his body over hers to protect her from the landslide in a selfless act of bravery.\u00a0 Unfortunately, Gracie lost not only her father but also her mother, sister and two cousins, one of whom was aged 10.\u00a0 Fortunately, it has now been possible to recover the bodies, an operation that had been delayed by ongoing instability. (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>..<\/p>\n<p>The landslide occurred near to the foot of the Agnes Vaille waterfall.\u00a0 There is no obvious trigger event, although the slope may have been destabilised by the recent very heavy rainfall.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2013\/10\/01\/a-rockslide-on-mount-priceton\/#comment-15092\">Paul Lowrey posted a comment yesterday <\/a>in which he noted that &#8220;the granite is pretty well fractured with prevailing west-ish dip&#8221;, and he included this photo that he took of the foot of the waterfall
