{"id":6927,"date":"2013-09-26T08:22:44","date_gmt":"2013-09-26T08:22:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=6927"},"modified":"2013-09-26T08:22:44","modified_gmt":"2013-09-26T08:22:44","slug":"mining-industry-costs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2013\/09\/26\/mining-industry-costs\/","title":{"rendered":"The costs to the mining industry of landslides &#8211; examples from Brazil and the USA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the most significant effects of landslides is the impact that large events can have on the mining industry.\u00a0 Earlier this year we saw a very good example of that, when the massive slip at the Bingham Canyon mine in Utah in the USA (see posts <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2013\/06\/13\/nasa-imagery-of-the-bingham-canyon-landslide\/\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2013\/05\/17\/was-the-bingham-canyon-landslide-the-largest-ever-non-volcanic-landslide-in-north-america\/\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2013\/04\/30\/analysing-the-bingham-canyon-mine-landslide-part-1-the-landslide-source-area\/\">here<\/a>) led to a short-term shut down, and a long-term reduction, in production, at huge expense to the owners in clean-up costs and lost production.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ksl.com\/?nid=148&amp;sid=26661994\"> A report earlier this month suggested that they had removed 6 million tons to date<\/a> &#8211; that&#8217;s impressive, but bear in mind the landslide was estimated to have a mass of 165 million tons, so there is only 159 million tons to go! \u00a0 The implications of this event went far beyond the mine itself, and its employees.\u00a0 For example, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sltrib.com\/sltrib\/politics\/56857715-90\/tax-county-sales-brown.html.csp\">Salt Lake County saw a decline in its sales tax revenues<\/a> after the landslide, attributed at least in part to the reduction in activity in the mine.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6426\" style=\"width: 604px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2013\/05\/13_05-Bingham-Canyon-61.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6426\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6426\" alt=\"Kennecott Utah, used with permission\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2013\/05\/13_05-Bingham-Canyon-61.png\" width=\"594\" height=\"598\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2013\/05\/13_05-Bingham-Canyon-61.png 594w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2013\/05\/13_05-Bingham-Canyon-61-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2013\/05\/13_05-Bingham-Canyon-61-297x300.png 297w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 594px) 100vw, 594px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6426\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kennecott Utah, used with permission<\/p><\/div>\n<p>..<\/p>\n<p>The clean up there continues, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mineweb.com\/mineweb\/content\/en\/mineweb-base-metals?oid=204807&amp;sn=Detail\">although not without some hiccups along the way<\/a>.\u00a0 We won&#8217;t know the true costs of this event for a long while, but it will be extraordinarily expensive, even by the standards of the mining industry.<\/p>\n<p>Today, <a href=\"http:\/\/in.reuters.com\/article\/2013\/09\/25\/angloamerican-amapa-idINWLA007SI20130925\">another story has emerged<\/a> about a mining company taking a huge hit from a landslide. Earlier this year, in March , I posted a couple of pieces (<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2013\/04\/03\/more-information-about-the-brazil-riverbank-failure-landslide\/\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2013\/04\/02\/the-strange-case-of-the-sinking-pontoon-in-brazil\/\">here<\/a>) about a large riverbank collapse landslide at Santana in Amapa, Brazil.\u00a0 This event destroyed the loading facilities for an iron ore mine, and killed six people:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6191\" style=\"width: 415px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2013\/04\/13_04-Brazil-8.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6191\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6191\" alt=\"http:\/\/www.portalamazonia.com.br\/editoria\/cidades\/ma-estrutura-do-pier-da-anglo-american-causou-acidente-no-amapa\/\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2013\/04\/13_04-Brazil-8.jpg\" width=\"405\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2013\/04\/13_04-Brazil-8.jpg 405w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2013\/04\/13_04-Brazil-8-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 405px) 100vw, 405px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6191\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">http:\/\/www.portalamazonia.com.br\/editoria\/cidades\/ma-estrutura-do-pier-da-anglo-american-causou-acidente-no-amapa\/<\/p><\/div>\n<p>..<\/p>\n<p>The timing of the landslide was somewhat inconvenient as the owners of the mine, Anglo American, had agreed in January to sell its majority (70%) stake in the mine company (Amapa).\u00a0 Of course, the loss of the loading facilities, the fines imposed by the government, and the negative publicity led the parties to revisit the deal.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2013\/09\/25\/angloamerican-amapa-idUSL5N0HL0JS20130925?feedType=RSS&amp;feedName=basicMaterialsSector\">Yesterday, a revised deal was announced<\/a> in which the landslide was specifically named as a factor.\u00a0 Anglo American ended up buying out the other 30% of Amapa, and then selling on the entire company.\u00a0 The article does not say how much they lost in the process, but in this industry the numbers are large.
