{"id":691,"date":"2007-12-19T08:45:00","date_gmt":"2007-12-19T08:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2007\/12\/19\/swiss-re-loss-data\/"},"modified":"2010-10-21T13:55:43","modified_gmt":"2010-10-21T17:55:43","slug":"swiss-re-loss-data","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2007\/12\/19\/swiss-re-loss-data\/","title":{"rendered":"Swiss Re loss data"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The reinsurance company Swiss Re yesterday released its preliminary annual loss data for 2007.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.swissre.com\/pws\/media%20centre\/news\/news%20releases%202007\/cata%20sigma%2018%20dec%202007.html\">Swiss Re Loss data<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Notable elements are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span><\/span>\n<p class=\"page_summary_field\">Their initial estimate is that &gt;20 000 people were killed by natural and man-made catastrophes in 2007<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li><span><\/span>\n<p class=\"page_summary_field\">Financial losses from catastrophes represented a loss of USD 61 billion across the globe<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li><span>The three largest financial losses occurred in Europe as a result of storms<br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><\/span>\n<p class=\"page_summary_field\">Four of the five biggest losses of life occurred in Asia.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li><span><\/span>\n<p class=\"page_summary_field\">Insured losses amounted to USD 25 billion, which is USD 9 billion higher than in 2006.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>My own dataset suggests that the number of people killed by landslides in 2007 to date is about 2,600 &#8211; i.e. more than 10% of the global disaster toll.<br \/><span><\/p>\n<p>Finally, Swiss Re usefully publish a graph of insured catastrophe losses since 1970:<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span><\/p>\n<p><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.swissre.com\/resources\/eea39d8047f2605a97e39fd3186693f3-ins_cat_losses_70_07.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px auto 10px;text-align: center;cursor: pointer;width: 400px\" src=\"http:\/\/www.swissre.com\/resources\/eea39d8047f2605a97e39fd3186693f3-ins_cat_losses_70_07.gif\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>Note that there appears to be something wrong with the x-axis here, but the overall upward trend is clear.  2007 probably ranks as a below trend year in terms of insured losses.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The reinsurance company Swiss Re yesterday released its preliminary annual loss data for 2007.
