I have coded the rainfall induced landslides as black dots and those caused by other causes as red dots. <\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/bmp\/08_02-January-map_bmp.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px auto 10px;text-align: center;cursor: pointer\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/bmp\/08_02-January-map_bmp.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-family: arial;font-weight: bold;font-size:85%\">The January 2008 fatal landslide distribution map.  Rainfall-induced landslides are the black dots, those caused by other processes (mostly quarrying and construction) are in red.  Click on the map for a larger version.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: left\">A few observations on the data:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I recorded 20 fatal landslides in the month with a total of 106 fatalities<\/li>\n<li>Of these, only six were triggered by rainfall, accounting for 56 deaths.<\/li>\n<li>There is a notable cluster of landslides in northern India.  However, most of these were triggered construction or quarrying, so it probably represents just a coincidence.<\/li>\n<li>Overall, the total is below the long term average for the number of fatalities occurring in January.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I welcome any thoughts, observations or comments.<\/div>\n<p><\/div>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Below is the fatal landslide distribution map for January 2008.
